6 Tips for Arranging Living Room Furniture in Your New Home

A common challenge with moving from one home to another is finding ways to fit your furniture in to new spaces. Whether you're aiming to create an amazing living room, great room, family room or den, the best place to start is with a furniture arrangement that works well with the architecture and purpose of the room. When exploring the arrangement, take a look at these planning tips.

  • Map it out. Use a piece of graph paper (or any paper) to map out your space. Include your windows, walls and doorways. Then create post-it-note shapes of your major furnishings (couch, chairs, coffee tables, etc.). Now, with this aerial view, you can move items around without moving heavy furniture until you are sure. If you prefer, search for an online room planner tool to make this planning even easier.

  • Consider your traffic flow. What furniture and accessories (that you already own) are you planning to keep after the move? If you’d like to complete the whole room at one time, consider the promotional financing options available with the Synchrony HOME™ Credit Card that allow you to pay for your home purchases over time.*

  • Consider your budget. Another important consideration is that if the table is to be placed over a rug, each chair should remain on the rug surface when pulled away from the table to get in/out of the chair.

  • Define the purpose of the room. How is this room best used? Is it the central gathering place on a daily basis (or is it used occasionally for entertaining)? What activities does this room have to support—from TV viewing to reading or games? How many people should it seat comfortably? Given this number, will it foster conversation? Will work / homework be accomplished here? If TV viewing is important, where can it be placed to allow most of the seating to comfortably see the screen?

  • Take a look at the floor. Are you planning to use an existing rug (or add one)? Consider how this will influence traffic flow and room purpose. But remember, all of the furniture should sit on the carpet. If space doesn't allow it, make sure that at least the front legs of any large upholstered pieces are on the rug.

  • Don’t forget your focal point.Look around your room for your focal point, from a fireplace to a window, doorway or piece of art. Then consider arranging your room around this eye catcher.

Once you’ve done your planning, now it’s time to get moving. Remember, it might not all work with the first try. Since you’ve been using an aerial planner, you cannot see the height of pieces until they are in place. Keep moving things around until you have a room that is both visually interesting and supportive of your purpose!
