Black Friday & Cyber Monday FAQ
-
Today, Black Friday is known to millions as the official commencement of the holiday shopping season. The term was originally coined in the late 1800s, referring to a devious scheme that tanked the U.S. stock market. However, the term as we know it today was first used by Philadelphia police in the 1950s when referring to the day (Friday) before the annual Army-Navy football game.
Legend has it the game's popularity created such immense crowds that local police—and retailers—were overwhelmed by tourists who had flooded into town. Eventually, the police began referring to the day before the annual event as “Black Friday”. Over time, the phrase began to gain traction with retailers across the country who associated the term with the ability of shopping crowds to push a store’s profit margins into the black.
-
In 2023, Black Friday is on November 24. Cyber Monday is on November 27 this year. Traditionally, Black Friday is celebrated the day after Thanksgiving. However, over the past few years, more retailers have begun to extend Black Friday deals to include days before and after the customary timeframe. Some retailers have even gone so far as to begin offering Black Friday deals for the entire month of November.
-
The key difference, historically, between Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals is that Cyber Monday deals are exclusively found online. Because retailers are not limited by the square footage of a brick-and-mortar location, people are often able to find a greater number of Cyber Monday deals vs. Black Friday deals—and with much less walking! However, both offer benefits. For example, while Black Friday may not offer the quantity of deals available on Cyber Monday, you may find better deals if you are in the market for a big ticket item like a new television, gaming system, laptop, etc.
