As in fashion, home design trends come and go, and come back again. Here are 5 design trends making a comeback, and how to put them to use in your home today.

As in fashion, home design trends come and go... and often come back again. After all, the hugely popular design style known as mid century modern is based entirely on furniture, as well as architectural and design elements, from around 1933 - 1965 — otherwise known as the middle of the 20th century.1

Recently, a new style trend emerged in home design and décor, one that pays homage to the nostalgia of weekends at Nana’s house This design aesthetic popular among 20- and 30-somethings is called — wait for it — grandmillennial2 and prominently features lively patterns, dainty embellishments, and lots of floral, among other things.

While grandmillennial may or may not be for you, here are five additional design trends making a comeback, and how to put them to use in your home today.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper has gotten a major makeover from its last popular iteration in the ‘60s and ‘70s. In addition to fresh takes on florals, bold geometric patterns, metallic embellishments and eye-catching textures, most wallpapers are now available in peel-and-stick varieties that make it easy to apply (and remove as trends change). Not sure you’re ready for such a bold statement? Try using wallpaper to create an accent wall.3

Gold & Brass

The ‘80s and ‘90s are back in a big way, and that includes bold faucets, fixtures, and hardware in shiny gold and brass. Today’s take on the trend is offered in a variety of finishes, including satin, lacquered, polished, and antiqued.4

Interested, but wary of taking the plunge and updating all your hardware? Try mixing in a few brass or gold elements with the hardware you already have.4

Paneling

Nothing says 1970s like wood-paneled walls (except maybe macrame, which is also back in style!)6

but today’s version of paneling is a lot less oppressive and gloomy.7 Whether you’re planning to go full retro using dark wood, or brighten things up with a whitewash or light stain, try using paneling on a feature wall, bookcase or behind the bar.7

Woven Furniture

No longer just for patios, wicker, rattan, and other woven furniture is becoming increasingly popular as part of the trend toward maximalist design.8

This look can be incorporated in a variety of ways, from peacock chairs to couches, tables, and even cabinets.

Looking to start small? Try adding a rattan accent like a mirror, basket, ottoman, or light fixture to your room.8

Designated Spaces

After what seems like an endless amount of time at the top of the must-have lists for homes, open floor plans may be going the way of tile countertops. Perhaps the constant togetherness and lack of privacy we all experienced in 2020 has given homeowners a new appreciation for walls and doors. As was once the norm, more and more people are separating the living space from the kitchen and dining area9. Not ready to take on major construction? Try creating a room divider with folding screens or curtains, or create a dedicated lounge space in an unused room in the home.9
